UN DESA, Population Division

WPP2024_GEN_F01_DEMOGRAPHIC_INDICATORS_FULL.xlsx - POP/DB/WPP/Rev.2024/GEN/F01/Rev.1

Total fertility rate, net reproduction rate, crude birth rate, mean age at childbearing, sex ratio at birth, births, median age, life expectancy, net migration rate, total population. 237 countries and areas, 1950 to 2100, 12 projection variants.

World Population Prospects 2024 - Demographic Indicators, other scenarios

CC BY 3.0 IGO

UN DESA, Population Division

WPP2024_Demographic_Indicators_OtherVariants.csv.gz

The Constant-mortality scenario, 2024 to 2100, for all 237 countries and areas: medium fertility and migration, with mortality held from 2024 at its 2023 level, the last year of the estimates. The UN publishes 13 projection scenarios; the workbook above carries the other 12 but not this one, which is only in the UN's CSV files.

Its columns were checked against the High scenario, which both files carry: every value matches to the CSV's three decimals.

World Population Prospects 2024 - Interim update for Togo

CC BY 3.0 IGO

UN DESA, Population Division

WPP2024_GEN_F01_DEMOGRAPHIC_INDICATORS_COMPACT_Update.xlsx - POP/DB/WPP/Rev.2024/GEN/F01/Rev.1/update, with the matching population, fertility and deaths by age files

Togo's estimates for 1950 to 2023 and its medium projection for 2024 to 2100, as re-issued by the UN on 19 January 2026 after the detailed results of Togo's 2022 census. They replace Togo's figures in the demographic indicators, population by age and sex, births by age of mother and deaths by age.

The UN revised Togo only. Togo's other 12 scenarios and its prediction intervals are as first published, and so are the UN's own regional and world totals. Group aggregates on Insights are recomputed from country rows, so they carry the revised Togo figures.

World Population Prospects 2024 - Probabilistic Projections

CC BY 3.0 IGO

UN DESA, Population Division

UN_PPP2024_Input_TFR / Output_e0 / Output_PopTot

The published 80% and 95% prediction intervals for total fertility rate, life expectancy and total population, 2024 to 2100. These are the app's real uncertainty band; the 13 deterministic variants are scenarios and are labelled as such.

Constant-fertility and instant-replacement are counterfactuals, so reading the High variant as an upper bound misreads it. These files are what an interval actually looks like.

World Population Prospects 2024 - Population by single age and sex

UN DESA, Population Division

WPP2024_PopulationBySingleAgeSex_Medium (1950-2023 and 2024-2100)

The single-year population pyramid, ages 0 to 100+, medium variant.

World Population Prospects 2024 - Fertility rates by single age of mother

CC BY 3.0 IGO

UN DESA, Population Division

WPP2024_Fertility_by_Age1

The age profile of childbearing: births per 1,000 women at each single year of age. Shows a country's fertility schedule shifting later, which period TFR alone cannot separate from an actual fall in family size.

World Population Prospects 2024 - Abridged life tables

CC BY 3.0 IGO

UN DESA, Population Division

WPP2024_Life_Table_Abridged_Medium (1950-2023 and 2024-2100)

Survivors (lx) and remaining life expectancy at exact age (ex), both sexes, for the survivorship curve.

The complete life tables cover the same ground at roughly four times the size, so the abridged series is used.

World Population Prospects 2024 - Deaths by single age and sex

CC BY 3.0 IGO

UN DESA, Population Division

WPP2024_DeathsBySingleAgeSex_Medium

Deaths by single year of age, held in the per-country detail files.

World Population Prospects 2024 - Cohort fertility

CC BY 3.0 IGO

UN DESA, Population Division

FERT/F05 completed cohort fertility, FERT/F07 mean age at childbearing by cohort

What women born in each year from 1935 to 1968 actually completed, and at what mean age.

Period TFR is a single-year snapshot and falls when childbearing is merely postponed. Cohort fertility follows a birth cohort to the end of its reproductive life, so it is free of that tempo distortion. Cohorts stop at 1968 because later ones are not finished.

World Population Prospects 2024 - Population by 5-year age group and sex

CC BY 3.0 IGO

UN DESA, Population Division

WPP2024_PopulationByAge5GroupSex_Medium.csv.gz

Women aged 15 to 49 and 30 to 44, the denominator for fertility-care demand. Medium variant, 1950 to 2100.

Age-specific fertility rates, and from them the share of total fertility contributed by mothers aged 35 and over.

Classification

Which country belongs to which group - not part of the WPP release

Standard country or area codes for statistical use (M49)

UN terms of use

UN Statistics Division

Geographic region and sub-region hierarchy; the Least Developed, Landlocked Developing and Small Island Developing State flags; and the Developed / Developing classification. SDG regions are derived from M49 sub-region codes per the UNSD grouping.

The WPP workbook publishes these groups as aggregate rows but never says which country belongs to which. This is where the membership comes from.

World Bank country and lending groups

World Bank

Income group per economy (high, upper-middle, lower-middle, low), via the public country API.

Reassigned every July. A historical map coloured by today's income groups is an anachronism, so treat membership as time-varying.

Geometry and basemap

What draws the map

Natural Earth - Admin 0 countries, 1:50m

Public domain

Natural Earth, via world-atlas

Country polygons for the choropleth, joined to WPP on the M49 numeric code.

Ten WPP areas have no polygon at this resolution and appear in tables and totals but not on the map. Drawn for visitors outside India, China and Japan: boundaries as de facto controlled.

Natural Earth - Admin 0 countries, 1:10m, point-of-view editions

Public domain

Natural Earth

Country polygons for visitors in India, China and Japan, so disputed borders are drawn as that country's own maps draw them. Chosen automatically from the visitor's country; the data behind every polygon is the same.

Taiwan in the China edition and Western Sahara in the India edition keep their own polygons, because the UN reports them separately, as it does Hong Kong and Macao.

Province outlines on the story steps that zoom in on the Republic of Korea, Niger, Chad, Somalia and the Central African Republic. For orientation only; the data stays national.

Mapbox, with OpenStreetMap contributors

Basemap tiles, labels and the globe projection. Its worldview is set to India, China or Japan for visitors from those countries, to match the polygons.
