IFFS Lens Terms of Use
Last updated: 20 October 2026
1.About these terms
These terms of use (“terms”) apply whenever you visit or use IFFS Lens™ at www.iffslens.com, whether or not you have an account. Please read them. If you do not agree to them, please do not use IFFS Lens.
The first time you sign in to IFFS Lens, we ask you to accept these terms, and we record that you did. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your personal data. It is there to inform you. It is not a contract you agree to.
These terms include our Refund and Cancellation Policy.
IFFS Lens is a service for members of IFFS. You join IFFS on the IFFS Hub, which is IFFS's membership platform. Your IFFS membership is covered by the membership terms shown on the IFFS Hub when you join or renew. If those terms conflict with these terms, these terms apply to IFFS Lens, and the IFFS Hub membership terms apply to your membership itself, including its price, payment, renewal, cancellation and refunds.
Some parts of these terms apply only to consumers, and some apply only to business customers. A consumer is an individual acting mainly for purposes outside their trade, business, craft or profession. If you buy in your own name, we will treat you as a consumer. A business customer is an organisation, or a person buying in an organisation's name and with its details.
Some laws protect you and cannot be changed by a contract, including your statutory rights as a consumer where you live. Nothing in these terms affects those rights.
2.Who we are
IFFS Lens is run by the International Federation of Fertility Societies (“IFFS”, “we”, “us”, “our”). When you use IFFS Lens, your contract is with IFFS. IFFS also sells IFFS memberships, on the IFFS Hub. It is also the controller of the personal data processed through IFFS Lens, which means it decides how that data is used.
Our postal address is 10685-B Hazelhurst Dr. #26427, Houston TX 77043, USA. Our email address is secretariat@iffsreproduction.org. You can find other ways to reach us under “Contact us” below.
Other organisations help us run IFFS Lens:
- ICS Events (IFFS secretariat, management and operations);
- Heel Turn (design and development);
- Portnov Agency (data support).
We also use hosting, database and map providers, which our Privacy Policy names. The IFFS Hub uses Wild Apricot and a payment provider for memberships and payments, and Wild Apricot also runs the sign-in page you use to sign in to IFFS Lens. All these organisations work for IFFS. None of them is a party to these terms.
3.What IFFS Lens is
IFFS Lens is an interactive atlas with a set of data stories. It shows estimates and projections from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2024 (“UN WPP 2024”). It covers fertility, population, mortality and migration for 237 countries and areas, from 1950 to 2100.
The atlas, the insights, the declaration and the sources are open to everyone, with no account. Signing in gives IFFS members the member dashboard, where they can save maps from the atlas, compare two to four countries side by side and keep a watchlist of countries. Standard and Premium both include these.
IFFS Lens runs in an up-to-date web browser. For the interactive maps, your browser and device must support WebGL.
IFFS Lens is for information, education and research. It is not medical, clinical, health, legal, financial or investment advice. It does not assess anyone's fertility or health, or give advice about it. Do not use it to make decisions about anyone's care or treatment. Population figures describe countries and groups, not individuals. If you need advice, speak to a qualified professional.
4.Accounts
You must be 18 or over to have an IFFS Lens account. IFFS Lens is not aimed at children.
You sign in to IFFS Lens with your IFFS Hub login, and only while you hold an active IFFS membership. The administrators IFFS names are the only exception. You sign in on IFFS's own sign-in page, which Wild Apricot runs, and IFFS Lens never receives your IFFS Hub password. The first time you sign in, we ask you to accept these terms and our Privacy Policy and to confirm that you are 18 or over, and we record when you did. Until you do, you cannot use anything that needs an account.
Your IFFS Hub password belongs to the IFFS Hub. You reset or change it there, never in IFFS Lens. You must:
- keep your details on the IFFS Hub accurate;
- keep your IFFS Hub password secure and not share it with anyone;
- be the only person who uses your IFFS Hub login;
- tell us straight away at secretariat@iffsreproduction.org if you think someone else has used your account.
One IFFS Hub login gives one IFFS Lens account. Your IFFS Lens account is tied to your IFFS Hub contact number, not to your email address. If you have more than one IFFS Hub login, each has its own IFFS Lens account.
You are responsible for what you do on your account, and for what anyone you allow to use it does. You are not responsible for misuse that is not your fault, for example if we did not take reasonable care to keep your account secure.
After your first sign-in, we ask three optional questions: what brings you to IFFS Lens, which topics interest you, and where you work. You can skip any of them. Your answers are kept with your account, and they do not change what IFFS Lens shows you. Please do not put sensitive information, such as health details, in the “where you work” box.
Your name and email address come from the IFFS Hub: change them there, and IFFS Lens follows the next time it reads your membership. You can download a copy of your IFFS Lens data, or delete it, on your account page. If you cannot sign in, email secretariat@iffsreproduction.org from the address on your account to ask for either.
Deleting your IFFS Lens data does not close your IFFS Hub login or cancel your IFFS membership. It does not stop payments set up on the IFFS Hub either. If you sign in again later, a new IFFS Lens account is made, and we ask you to accept these terms again.
5.Your personal data
IFFS is responsible for the personal data processed through IFFS Lens. In data-protection law, this makes IFFS the “controller”. Our Privacy Policy explains:
- what we collect and why;
- who receives it;
- how long we keep it;
- your rights;
- the cookies IFFS Lens uses to sign you in and keep you signed in;
- what the security log records;
- what Mapbox receives when maps load.
Membership and payment details are handled on the IFFS Hub using Wild Apricot, not in IFFS Lens.
6.Acceptable use
You must use IFFS Lens lawfully and in line with these terms. You must not:
- break any law, or infringe anyone's rights, when you use IFFS Lens;
- use bots, scrapers or other automated tools to copy or extract data or content in bulk, beyond what IFFS Lens features allow;
- get around, disable or interfere with sign-in, access controls, rate limits or other security features;
- try to access accounts, data or systems that you are not allowed to access;
- test, scan or probe IFFS Lens for security weaknesses without our written permission;
- decompile or reverse engineer IFFS Lens software, except where the law or an open-source licence allows it;
- overload or disrupt IFFS Lens or the services it relies on, or introduce malware;
- share your IFFS Hub login or your IFFS Lens account, or let anyone else use them (except that people at a member society may share the society's one IFFS Hub login, its password and its IFFS Lens account, whatever else these terms say, and the society is responsible for who uses them);
- use IFFS Lens to build a competing database or service;
- present IFFS Lens data or outputs in a misleading way, or as the position of IFFS or the United Nations when they are not;
- suggest that IFFS or the United Nations endorses you, your organisation or your work;
- use IFFS Lens where doing so would break sanctions or export-control laws that apply to you or to us.
If you find a security weakness, please report it to secretariat@iffsreproduction.org and do not exploit it.
7.Our content and trademarks
IFFS Lens belongs to IFFS, or to those who license material to us. This includes:
- its software and design;
- its text, photographs, data stories and analyses;
- the way its data is selected, compiled, derived and presented.
Third-party data and maps are covered in the next section.
You may not copy, publish, adapt or sell our content without our written permission, except where these terms allow it. The outputs licence in “Using and crediting IFFS Lens outputs” does not cover photographs, logos or the design of IFFS Lens.
IFFS Lens™ and IFFS are trademarks of the International Federation of Fertility Societies. You may use these names to credit IFFS Lens as a source. You may not use our names or logos in these ways without our written permission:
- to suggest that we endorse you, your organisation or your work, or are connected with them;
- in the names of your own products or services.
If you send us ideas or suggestions about IFFS Lens, we may use them freely and without paying you. We will not name you publicly without your permission.
8.Third-party data and map licences
IFFS Lens uses data and services from other organisations. Their licences still apply. Nothing in these terms takes away the rights those licences give you.
- UN World Population Prospects 2024. The population data comes from the United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division (2024), World Population Prospects 2024, Online Edition (population.un.org/wpp). It is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 IGO (CC BY 3.0 IGO). IFFS has processed and visualised it.
- No UN endorsement. IFFS Lens is not a United Nations product. The United Nations does not endorse IFFS, IFFS Lens or any use made of its data. Boundaries and names shown do not imply official endorsement or acceptance by the United Nations.
- Your rights in UN data. You can still use the UN WPP 2024 data itself under CC BY 3.0 IGO, including by getting it directly from the United Nations. Nothing in these terms limits what that licence lets you do with it. Our restrictions cover only IFFS's own work: our derived figures, compilations, analyses, software and design.
- Natural Earth. IFFS Lens uses boundary data from Natural Earth, which is in the public domain.
- Mapbox and OpenStreetMap. When Mapbox maps are on, background maps come from Mapbox, with map data © Mapbox © OpenStreetMap. Your browser then connects directly to Mapbox, Mapbox's own terms apply to its maps, and the Mapbox logo and credit must stay visible. When they are off, IFFS Lens shows a simpler map drawn from Natural Earth boundaries that loads nothing from Mapbox. Our Privacy Policy explains when Mapbox maps load and what this involves.
- Open-source software. IFFS Lens is built with open-source software. Each component remains under its own licence.
Our Sources page lists the data sources IFFS Lens uses.
9.Using and crediting IFFS Lens outputs
“Outputs” means the charts, maps, tables, figures, numbers and short text summaries that IFFS Lens shows you or, where available, lets you download.
Default licence. IFFS gives you a free, non-exclusive, worldwide licence to copy, share, publish and adapt outputs for any purpose. It applies on condition that you:
- credit the source, as shown below;
- keep “© Mapbox © OpenStreetMap” on any output that shows the map background;
- say if you have changed an output, and do not change it in a misleading way;
- do not suggest that IFFS or the United Nations endorses you or your use.
If you do not meet these conditions, you lose the licence for that use.
What the default licence already allows. With credit, it lets:
- researchers cite and publish outputs in papers and reports;
- journalists publish charts and figures;
- teachers use outputs in teaching;
- industry and policy users use outputs internally or commercially.
How to credit IFFS Lens. We suggest: “Source: IFFS Lens, International Federation of Fertility Societies (iffslens.com), using UN DESA Population Division, World Population Prospects 2024 (CC BY 3.0 IGO).”
If you cite the UN data directly, the suggested citation is: “United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division (2024). World Population Prospects 2024, Online Edition.”
Some uses of map images, such as commercial printing, may need separate permission from Mapbox.
Outputs you have published in line with these terms can stay published after your account ends or your membership lapses.
10.IFFS membership, Standard and Premium
An active IFFS membership is needed to sign in. IFFS Lens is for members of IFFS. Only an IFFS Hub login with an active IFFS membership can sign in. A membership waiting for its renewal, or for a change to another membership, counts as active; one that has lapsed, and a new one still waiting for approval or payment, do not.
The IFFS Hub. The IFFS Hub (iffshub.com) is IFFS's membership platform, and it is where you join IFFS. Joining, payments, renewals and cancellations are handled through Wild Apricot, the membership system the IFFS Hub uses. You do not buy or pay for anything inside IFFS Lens.
Standard and Premium. IFFS Lens has two levels. Standard comes with every active IFFS membership. Premium comes with IFFS Hub All Access Membership. Our pricing page lists the memberships that give each level and what each level includes. Today, Standard and Premium include the same features. IFFS Lens itself sells nothing and takes no payment.
How IFFS Lens recognises your membership. IFFS Lens reads your membership from the IFFS Hub when you sign in, and again at most once a day while you use it. A change on the IFFS Hub, such as a renewal, a new membership or a move to IFFS Hub All Access Membership, shows in IFFS Lens the next time you sign in, or within a day of your next visit if you are already signed in. While a move to another membership waits for approval or payment on the IFFS Hub, IFFS Lens shows you as Standard. If IFFS Lens cannot reach the IFFS Hub, it keeps using the level it last found for up to 7 days.
If your membership lapses, or stops being active for another reason, you cannot sign in until it is active again. “When your membership ends” below explains what happens to your IFFS Lens account.
IFFS Hub membership terms. The IFFS Hub membership terms cover the membership itself, including its price, payment, renewal, cancellation and refunds. These terms cover IFFS Lens. “About these terms” explains which applies if they conflict.
If IFFS Lens does not recognise your membership, or shows the wrong level, contact us and we will help.
11.Paying, renewing and cancelling
IFFS Lens takes no payment. You pay for your IFFS membership on the IFFS Hub, which uses Wild Apricot and a payment provider, and IFFS Lens never asks for or stores your card details. The price, billing, renewal and cancellation of your membership, and any refund, follow the IFFS Hub membership terms and our Refund and Cancellation Policy. You can see your membership and its invoices in your IFFS Hub profile, or email secretariat@iffsreproduction.org.
Nothing in these terms affects your rights as a consumer under the law where you live.
12.When your membership ends
When your IFFS membership ends, however it ends, IFFS Lens signs you out within a day of your next visit, and you cannot sign in again until you have an active membership. Premium needs an active IFFS Hub All Access Membership: if you move to another membership, IFFS Lens shows you as Standard.
When your membership ends:
- we keep your IFFS Lens account, with your saved maps, comparisons and watchlist, until you ask us to delete it, so that they are there again if you renew;
- you can still use the public parts of IFFS Lens;
- outputs you made and published in line with these terms can stay published, with the required credit.
13.Changes to IFFS Lens
We may change IFFS Lens, including its data, features and design, when we have a valid reason. For example, we may change it to:
- add new data, such as a later revision of the UN World Population Prospects;
- correct errors;
- improve, simplify or reorganise features;
- keep IFFS Lens secure;
- comply with the law, or with the requirements of our data and technology providers;
- respond when a provider changes or withdraws a service we rely on.
We may change, limit or withdraw features of IFFS Lens at any time, including what Standard and Premium include. We do not promise that IFFS Lens will always be available or free of errors, and we may take it offline for maintenance. This does not reduce your rights as a consumer under the law where you live.
If we stop offering IFFS Lens. Where we can, we will say so on IFFS Lens at least 30 days before.
14.Suspension and termination
We may suspend or end your IFFS Lens account if:
- you seriously or repeatedly break these terms;
- we reasonably need to act to protect IFFS Lens, other users or anyone else from harm or a security risk; or
- the law, a court or a regulator requires us to.
We will act in proportion to the problem. Where it is reasonable, we will warn you first and give you a chance to put things right. We will tell you why we have acted, unless the law or a security reason prevents us.
We also close your IFFS Lens account if the IFFS Hub tells us twice, at least a day apart, that it no longer has your IFFS Hub login, or tells us so once when another IFFS Hub login with the same email address tries to sign in to IFFS Lens. We keep a closed account until you ask us to delete it, and if you sign in again with the same login, we reopen it.
You can stop using IFFS Lens at any time. To have your IFFS Lens data deleted, see “Accounts”. To cancel your membership, see “Paying, renewing and cancelling”.
Some parts of these terms will still apply after they end, including the parts on published outputs, intellectual property, responsibility for loss, and disputes.
15.Accuracy of data and projections
IFFS Lens shows estimates and projections from UN WPP 2024, and figures IFFS has derived from them. Estimates may be revised, and projections of the future are uncertain.
The thirteen projection variants are scenarios, not confidence intervals. Each one rests on different assumptions. They are not predictions, and they do not show how likely any outcome is.
Boundaries and names shown do not imply official endorsement or acceptance by the United Nations. How some disputed borders are drawn may depend on the country you visit from. The boundaries and names do not reflect any view of IFFS on the status of a territory.
We take reasonable care when we process and present data, but we cannot promise that IFFS Lens is always complete, accurate or up to date. Check important figures against the original UN source before you rely on them.
IFFS Lens and its outputs are provided “as is” and “as available”. Apart from what these terms say and what the law requires, we make no other promises or warranties about them.
If you are a consumer in the EU or UK, the law protects you when digital content or services you pay for:
- are not as described;
- are not fit for purpose; or
- are not supplied with reasonable care and skill.
Depending on the case, the law may let you have the problem put right, get a price reduction, or end the contract and get money back. Nothing in these terms affects those rights.
16.Our responsibility for loss
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for:
- death or personal injury caused by our negligence;
- fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation;
- gross negligence or wilful misconduct; or
- anything else that the law does not allow us to exclude or limit.
If you are a consumer, we are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care and skill. Loss is foreseeable if it is obvious that it will happen, or if both you and we knew it might happen when you accepted these terms. We are not responsible for loss that is not foreseeable. Your statutory rights are not affected.
If you are a business customer, or are otherwise not a consumer, then, as far as the law allows and subject to the list at the start of this section:
- we are not liable for loss of profit, revenue, business, contracts or goodwill, for loss or corruption of data, or for any indirect or consequential loss; and
- our total liability to you for all claims connected with IFFS Lens is limited to the membership fees you paid to IFFS in the 12 months before the event that led to the claim.
We are not responsible for delays or failures caused by events outside our reasonable control, such as an outage at one of our providers. If this happens, we will tell you and do what we reasonably can to limit the effect.
Some US states do not allow certain warranties to be excluded or certain damages to be limited. If such a law applies to you, some of the limits above may not apply to you. In that case, our liability is limited only as far as that law allows.
17.Indemnity (business customers only)
This section applies only to business customers. It does not apply to consumers.
Someone else may bring a claim against IFFS that is caused by:
- you or your users breaking these terms; or
- you or your users infringing someone else's rights through use of IFFS Lens.
If so, you will repay IFFS's reasonable losses and costs from the claim, including reasonable legal fees.
This does not apply to the extent that IFFS's own breach or negligence caused the claim. We will tell you promptly about any such claim and cooperate reasonably with you.
18.Links and third-party services
IFFS Lens links to other websites, such as the IFFS website, the United Nations and organisations that work with us. Those sites have their own terms and privacy notices, and we are not responsible for their content.
The IFFS Hub is IFFS's own membership platform. Its membership terms apply as described above. When Mapbox maps are on, they load from Mapbox, and Mapbox's own terms and privacy policy apply to its service.
19.Governing law and disputes
Talk to us first. If you have a problem, contact us at secretariat@iffsreproduction.org. We will try to resolve it within 30 days. This does not stop you from going to a court or a regulator.
Governing law. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, USA. If you are a consumer living in the EU or UK, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live.
Courts. Where you can bring a claim depends on who you are:
- Consumers in the EU or UK can always bring a claim in the courts where they live, and we will bring any claim against them only in those courts.
- Other consumers may bring a claim in the courts of the place whose law governs these terms or, where their local law allows, in the courts where they live.
- Business customers agree that the courts of the place whose law governs these terms have exclusive jurisdiction.
No forced arbitration. We do not require anyone to settle disputes by arbitration. Nothing in these terms stops you from bringing or joining a group or class action where the law allows it. You can also use a small-claims court where one is available.
Alternative dispute resolution. We do not currently use an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) scheme for consumer disputes.
20.Changes to these terms
We may change these terms when we have a valid reason, such as:
- changes in the law or in regulatory guidance;
- changes to IFFS Lens;
- changes in how the IFFS Hub or our providers work;
- making the terms clearer;
- security reasons.
IFFS Lens sends no email. If a change is important, we give these terms a new version, and the next time you open a page that needs your account, you are asked to accept it before you go on. If you do not accept it, you are signed out, and you can accept it later. Other changes take effect when we publish the updated terms with a new “Last updated” date.
Changes never apply to anything that happened before they took effect.
If you keep using IFFS Lens after a change takes effect, the updated terms apply to you.
21.General legal terms
- Whole agreement. These terms, together with our Refund and Cancellation Policy and, for membership matters, the IFFS Hub membership terms, are the whole agreement between you and IFFS about IFFS Lens. This does not limit liability for fraud.
- If part is invalid. If a court decides that part of these terms cannot be enforced, the rest still applies.
- Delay. If we do not enforce a right straight away, we can still enforce it later.
- Transfer. We may transfer these terms to another organisation that takes over IFFS Lens. We will tell you if we do, and it will not reduce your rights. You may not transfer your account or these terms to anyone else without our written agreement.
- Third parties. Only you and IFFS have rights under these terms. No one else can enforce them, including under the UK Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999.
- Notices. IFFS Lens sends no email. We give notices about IFFS Lens on IFFS Lens itself. Please send notices to us at secretariat@iffsreproduction.org.
- Language. These terms are in English.
